What I find a bit strange is the fact Google is trying to become something quite different from its main purpose; as you pointed out, it's cool to have this kind of Yellow Pages of the world, but it seems pretty clear to me that unforgettable travel experiences will never be translated using Google's Page tool. Google is a practical tool, it's supposed to make our lives easier. It's not an encyclopedia or a travel guide. However, I must admit that Google Street View has enabled me to experience a city in a different way, maybe not the best though, but still; I always look up my next destination and have a quick look at Street View to get a sense of the place before I go, and sometimes I can find a little café, or a boutique that's been commented by other users. Is it useful? Yes. Can it be more than that? I don't think so.

Interesting. I've long thought the best travel book might involve several perspectives on a place, a trawl down through its different layers - for example, food, people, underworld - written by specialists who've really lived those areas.
